Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
You could argue that Cole got far, far many more England caps than Dev.

Though comparing players from different eras is nonsense. Pitches were different, diets were different, molly coddling of players was different....

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Joe Cole on his day was brilliant, so was Devo. I reckon Devonshire on the carpet-like pitches that Cole enjoyed plus the extra protection from refs, would have made him untouchable. He would have destroyed modern defences

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Not really a fair question. Apart from the comparision between players in different eras being a challenge they were fairly different. Devonshire tore defenders a new one by running at them at speed where as Cole was so skillful with the ball.
I worked for a bloke who supported Arsenal and he couldn't get over how Cole left Vierra seating on his arse in the centre circle at Upton Park one day.
They were both great players and should have been utilised by England far more than they were - Devonshire never got enough chances and Cole had to play out of his best position to get in the team which was ridiculous.

Both great.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Cole got 56 England caps and played at the top end of the league for most of his career, winning titles, etc. So hardly an outlandish claim is it you old dino.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
As has been said it's nonsense to compare players from different eras. However to use England caps as any form of metric is equally ridiculous - unless, of course, Càrlton Palmer and Geoff Thomas really were better players than Bonzo

Manuel 7:24 Sat Mar 13
Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
It's not ridiculous at all when you get 56 caps. Only one person talking nonsense here. fella. I suppose in your mind playing for Chelsea and Liverpool and winning titles counts for nothing too?

How exactly DO you judge a players success, or not, in your mind?

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Joe Cole only rarely lived up to the reputation which preceded him. Devonshire far exceeded expectations.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
I think you'll find the OP is all about comparing players from different eras. I'm merely agreeing with the posters who suggest it's not really possible. It's nothing to do with judging them. I realise you're a bit hard of thinking but do try to keep up

Not so sure that Cole would be so good at his stuff if he had to play on the potato fields Devonshire graced.

My gast is well and truly flabbered that it’s not obvious to the usual wollies posting here.
Still nothing should surprise me on WHO the not very football forum.

''I think you'll find the OP is all about comparing players from different eras''

Erh, he's not doing that at all. He is clearly stating that he rates Dev higher than Cole, where has he even spoke about different era's? Telling me I'm hard of thinking?? You fucking clown.

two very different types of creative player.
loved them both,
would really like them as 21 year olds in our squad right now

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Devonshire was a better player for us. Cole had a better career.

Grumpster 8:52 Sat Mar 13
Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Both quality and devo from an era where skillful players were fucked up a lot.

Also a lot tougher getting england caps back then, though cole was fully deserving of the ones he got, compared to the likes of Phil neville who got 59 of them and was truly fucking awful.

Tough to argue with Joe's career, had a blinder and like devo, injury probably stopped it being even better.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Haha! Righto Manuel

You win

Devo and Cole DIDN'T play in different eras...

And presumably Andy Sinton > Devo and using the stat kindly offered by Grumpster, Phil Neville > Bonzo

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Heskey's miles better than Le Tissier also...

Sven Roeder 10:29 Sat Mar 13
Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Both very talented players .... but only one left for Chelsea.

As said on modern pitches with no tackling allowed Devonshire would be unplayable.

Manuel 10:42 Sat Mar 13
Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
No tackling allowed? What a whiny little bitch you are.
